Before Mr.Obama became the US President, there were only very people who knew that he could speak Indonesian language. Yes, Mr. President Barrack Obama can speak Indonesian! How is that possible? It is because Obama used to live in Indonesia for four years when he was still a very young kid, following his mother who was married to an Indonesian guy. But despite the so many years, it turns out that Mr. President still remembers a few words in Indonesian language.

Indonesian language is so easy that even Mr. Obama who has hardly used the language anymore still remembers how to speak the language well.

Many of his classmates still remember him as a cute, funny little guy back then. Even his teachers remember Barry (the nickname they used to call him) as a smart boy who never had problem in his lessons, although most lessons were delivered in Indonesian language.

Speak Indonesian Like Obama!

Obama Can Speak Indonesian

So… you want to speak Indonesian as fluently as little Barry did? Simply join our Indonesian language course and we will guide and direct you personally to ensure that you speak Indonesian language in a short period of time.

As long as you learn the language seriously and do the assignment properly, your Indonesian language speaking skills will improve very rapidly.

Below is an interesting video taken from CNN showing Mr. Obama’s old school in Menteng, Jakarta, Indonesia. The US president’s old friends in Indonesia really look forward to meeting little Barry who is now the leader of the super power country in the near future.

Who would have known back then that the cute little boy named Barry would become such a great man like what he is today? The Indonesians are so proud of Mr. Obama that they have built a statue of little Barry which is now at Mr. President’s old school at Menteng, Jakarta.

If Mr. President can speak Indonesian, and so can you. So start learning Indonesian now!

By: IndonesianLanguage.net

Before you learn Indonesian grammar or vocabularies, it is essential that you learn how to speak Indonesian first. Each language has its own system of sounds which is unlike that of any other language. When you begin to learn a new language, you must learn to make distinctions which are not made in your own language, and you must learn to articulate in a way different from that to which you are accustomed. Correct pronunciation and the ability to distinguish new sounds do not come automatically, but are achieved through a process of comparison and imitation, as we lead you to do in the exercises in this and the following lessons. The ability to articulate like an Indonesian will come from constant imitation of the sentences and sounds spoken on the tapes and spoken by your tutor.

In this section, we will give you a notion of what the sounds used in Indonesian are, how they are made, and how they differ from those used in English. And hopefully this could give you a slight idea of how to speak Indonesian.

Vowels:

a: In open syllables is pronounced more or less like the a in “far”.

For example: kata = word

In closed syllables it sounds like the English u in “but”.

For example: surat = letter

e: When unstressed is pronounced as the mute e in “open”.

For example: kelas = class

When stressed it sounds somewhere between the e in “bed” and the a in “bad”.

For example: meja = table

i: In open syllables is pronounced as the ee in “feet”.

For example: kita = we

In closed syllables the sound is shorter, like i in “tip”.

For example: minta = to ask for

o: is pronounced like the a in “tall”.

For example: botol = bottle

u: is pronounced like the oo in “tool”, however with lips rounded.

For example: susu = milk

Diphtongs:

ai: The diphthong ai in open syllables sounds like the i in “fine”.

For example: sampai = to arrive

However the diphthong ai can also pronounced as two separate sounds a-i :

For example: lain = other

au: Has the same sound as ow in “how”.

For example: kalau = if

However in closed syllables it is two-syllabic.

For example: haus = thirsty.

Below is the video which could help you learn how to speak Indonesian based on the examples above:

Having an Indonesian dictionary is totally a must if you really want to learn Indonesian language seriously. With a dictionary around, it will be much easier for you to understand many new vocabularies during your Indonesian learning process, therefore it speeds your learning, too. Even if you’ve got a personal Indonesian language teacher yourself, it is highly recommended that you have a good Indonesian dictionary. It is mainly because your teacher can’t be around you for twenty four hours a day, ready to answer all of your questions. Therefore a dictionary can serve as an emergency help when you need to know the meaning of certain words. However not all Indonesian dictionaries are good. I have seen many dictionaries which look good on the outside but very poor in quality. Always avoid these kinds of useless dictionaries which sometimes also give you improper translation. So, the question is now: What are the characters of a good Indonesian dictionary?

A good Indonesian dictionary should be intended to be a practical, comprehensive dictionary of modern Indonesian with English equivalents for the use of those who wish to read contemporary Indonesian materials. A large number of technical terms should be included as well, but it doesn’t need to be too exhaustive. The dictionary should also be useful to Indonesians who wish to learn the English equivalent of an Indonesian utterance.

Characteristics of a Good Indonesian Dictionary

A good Indonesian dictionary should also serve as primary tool for English speakers who need to know and learn Indonesian language and who deal with Indonesian writings. The aim thus has been to give comprehensive coverage to foreigners who might run across in Indonesian readings. As already mentioned above, a good Indonesian dictionary should also benefit the Indonesian speakers who wish to learn English equivalents of Indonesian words.

Indonesian Dictionary

Being the official language of the Republic of Indonesia, and which is also spoken as a first or second language by a majority of the population throughout the republic, Indonesian language (or, Bahasa Indonesia) has some closely related dialects which are spoken in Malaysia, called Bahasa Malaysia, and in Brunei. However a good Indonesian dictionary, as the name suggests, should only lists words that are used in Indonesia. Words that are not used in Indonesia or meanings or words which are only found in Malaysia should be excluded from the dictionary’s lists of words.

Just like some English dictionaries, especially those from Oxford, some Indonesian dictionaries also include some descriptive illustrations. The inclusion of illustrations for a large number of entries and sub-entries may provide the English-speaking students with examples of usage in context, thereby giving some indication of the range of meaning of the items.

As mentioned in the previous article regarding ‘The History of Indonesian Language’, the Indonesian language is regarded as an open language which is always developing and therefore accepting and even blending new terms almost every day. Thus it is not surprising that the old Indonesian dictionaries list words which are not included in the modern dictionary, and vice versa.

That is why it is very important to buy only the latest Indonesian dictionary. You can check when it was first published. And be also very careful if it is a reprinted of an old version, which sometimes does not include some new terms. However for those who would prefer to have an electronic Indonesian dictionary, be careful of some incorrect translations. To check if your electronic dictionary is working well, check what the word ‘seronok’ means in English. And check if you also find the same meaning in a conventional Indonesian dictionary for the same wordJ.

“Is speaking Indonesian a must in Indonesia?” Of course not. Everyone can speak whatever language they want to. But what if you don’t speak the same language which everyone can understand? May be you can still use the ‘Tarzan’s language’ which also means the body language. But this is not an easy thing to do either. Misunderstandings can happen easily. Therefore the only way out here is to try to learn the local language, that is the Indonesian language, which is also one of the easiest language in the world. There are quite many expatriates in many big cities in Indonesia right now. But only a few of them who know how to speak Bahasa, which is also known as Indonesian language.

Speaking Indonesian

Most expatriates who can speak Indonesian are the younger generations. The older generations tend to be reluctant having to learn a new language. So they ‘survive’ by having a personal assistant or rely on their local wives or maids.

On the subject of Indonesian language study, is it possible to end up speaking Indonesian like a native Indonesian speaker? Well, this depends on a number of different factors. By studying Indonesian seriously you can absolutely soon get a working knowledge of the language that will enable you to communicate in the language fluently and freely at an everyday level. If you then want to take it further, you surely can.

I have known several English speaking people who have lived in Indonesia for years and they end up speaking Indonesian like the real Indonesians! It is because they hang out more with the locals and learn how to pronounce the language just like the native Indonesian speakers do. Now when they are speaking on the phone, we can hardly tell if we are talking to a native Indonesian speaker or not.

Speaking Indonesian is Easy

Many people are aware that speaking Indonesian is easy once you know the ‘key’. However there are still expatriates who have lived years in Indonesia yet they can still hardly speak Indonesian. This is because they use English in their everyday’s lives. Even when they have learned Indonesian language a little bit and want to practice their newly learned language with the locals, the locals tend to practice their English as well. As a result this poor guy has no chance to practice his Indonesian.

Actually those English speaking people can learn Indonesian more effectively by watching Indonesian TV programs through satellite PC TV which is now available at very affordable price now. Check out some of the best Satellite PC TV below:

What about an expatriate who has an English speaking maid or wife or personal assistant? Isn’t it good thing if he has a local wife or an English speaking maid who can help him translate almost anything into Indonesian? And, the non-Indonesian speaking expatriate should be able to learn from the wife and practice speaking Indonesian with her, shouldn’t they?

Well, sadly speaking, it’s not almost the case. As I have mentioned above, he himself always speaks English with his local wife or the assistant or whoever who on the other hand also wants to practice and improve their English speaking ability with him. It’s no surprising to know that some expatriates whose wives are Indonesians have no idea how to speak Indonesian at all.

It’s all because everyone seems to prefer to speak English all the time with him. So he has no chance to learn, let alone to practice speaking Indonesian language. That’s why finding a professional bahasa teacher is the only way out to be able to speak Indonesian well and efficiently.

How can I speak Indonesian well? Is there a way how can I master the language within a short period of time? Of course, the best way to understand and even master a new language is to use the language in your daily life. But how can you communicate with the local people if none of you speak the same language? It is indeed very frustrating if you can not speak Indonesian at all and the locals can barely understand English. Therefore the only way out is to start learning Indonesian as soon as possible.

Tips to Speak Indonesian

Indonesian language is written in Romanized script and pronounced similar to Germanic alphabets. It is not phonetic. Bahasa Indonesia (the Indonesian word for Indonesian language) contains a few words of Sanskrit, Arabic, English, Chinese, Dutch, Portugese, Indian, and other foreign languages, which are all pronounced the Indonesian way. Therefore you might find some Indonesian words which derive from the English words and have the exactly same meaning, however pronounced differently. And this what makes Indonesian language one of the easiest languages in the world. This is also one of the reasons why it is so easy to speak Indonesian, even for those in very early stages of learning.

I have a few tips for you who want to learn to speak Indonesian. If you are really serious in learning Indonesian, it is highly suggested that you learn how to pronounce the words first before learning anything further, such as the grammar or even colloquial which are much more complex subjects to learn. You can find the video of how to pronounce the Indonesian words correctly in: How to speak Indonesian. After you watch the video, you will soon realize just how easy it is to learn Indonesian. Then after you learn how to speak Indonesian, if you’re interested, you can proceed on learning the grammar or colloquial.

Speak Indonesian Now!

Speak Indonesian

If you are really serious to learn a new language, it is highly suggested that you get yourself a professional language teacher who can teach and direct you to master the language within a short period of time. Surely you can learn the language from the locals who barely understand English. But how long are you willing to sacrifice your valuable time trying to understand each other? And how do they explain a specific term correctly in the most efficient way? To be able to speak Indonesian well is the primary goal for every one who is learning Indonesian language. It’s no use learning the language if you can’t use it to communicate with the locals.

Try to be discipline and you’ll see the result only within around 3 months. If you really want to be able to speak Indonesian well, you not only have to get yourself a private teacher who can guide and direct you, but also to practice the language as well.If you have several mostly used Indonesian vocabularies in your head already and know how to build a good sentence, you’ll be able to speak Indonesian within no time.
