worth it?” are only few of the questions we hear from non-Indonesian speaking people who live in Indonesia. They happen to stay in Indonesia for some reasons, either it is because they have been hired to work in one of a multi national companies in Indonesia, or because they are housewives and children who are following their husbands and fathers who are working in Indonesia, or even some seasonal tourists who like to visit Indonesia many times. It is widely known that there are NO many Indonesian people who can communicate in English well, including those who are supposed to be able to speak in English, such as shop assistants, office boys and girls, drivers, and others who have to interact with people around them most of the time. Most of these people have learned how to speak English during school and yet they don’t really know how to communicate with a foreigner using the proper English language. So there is no other choice for the expatriates here trying to learn bahasa. It is the only way for them to be able to communicate with the Indonesian people.

Is Learning Indonesian Easy?

Learning Indonesian might seem a hassle at the beginning. You’ll have to memorize some mostly used vocabularies and try to implement that in daily conversation. But as soon as you start your lesson, you’ll find out just how easy the language is! I’m not exaggerating here. Indonesian language or bahasa Indonesia is one of the easiest languages in the world. It is simply because there is hardly any grammar in the language itself, especially if you want to learn bahasa only to enable you to communicate with the local people.

If you want to interact with the local people, especially if you want to be part of them or want to know their culture, or at least, just to be able to communicate with the Indonesian people, learning Indonesian is the first step you must do when you first step your feet in Indonesia. It’s really worth it.

Indonesian English Translation – All about It

By: IndonesianLanguage.net

What is the best way to do the Indonesian English translation? Should we do it literally, word by word? Or, is there a special and unique way to translate the Indonesian sentences into English? Just like any other languages, some Indonesian sentences can be translated into English literally, which is therefore makes it so easy. But on the other hand, there are also other sentences which can not be translated as easily as that, and phrases fall into this category.

However the Indonesian English translation for beginners should be made as simple as possible, which is important in the early stages of learning Indonesian. Later when their overall Indonesian speaking skills have improved, they can be taught on how to translate more complex sentences. Below are a few examples of simple Indonesian to English translation which can be done literally:

Indonesian English Translation

In the latter learning process, the learners will have to learn how to do the Indonesian English translation for more complex sentences and phrases which are commonly used in daily conversation. When they have understood the basic sentence structures, it would not be difficult at all for them to learn the more advanced sentence structures, and eventually be able to construct their own complex sentences.

How to Do the Indonesian English Translation

Just like any other world languages, beginners should learn the very basic sentence structures which would make it much easier to comprehend. In this process they will also learn some basic Indonesian grammar as well as improve their vocabulary lists which are essential in building sentences.

In the latter process, the learners will have to learn more complex structures as well as some mostly used phrases. It is highly suggested that the learners try to memorize a number of words and phrases and try to make sentences out of them and also try to use them in daily conversation. A professional’s help is needed to support this activity so that the learners can progress much faster.

Below is an example of a more complex sentence structure:

Complex Indonesian English Translation

How long does it need for a beginner to be able to learn this complex sentence structure? Usually an adult learner will be able to comprehend this very easy Indonesian English translation only within one hour. And the next process should come more easily. The key to really master Indonesian language is a good understanding of the Indonesian grammar, a sufficient list of the Indonesian vocabularies, and a strong will to succeed.

During the Indonesian learning process the learners should also be equipped with a good English to Indonesian dictionary, and vice versa. A good example of this dictionary would be those composed by John M. Echols and Hassan Shadily. What about an electronic dictionary or a talking dictionary? Would they be any help? If you are a frequent traveler, yes, that would be a great help though these kinds of electronic devices can not provide you with some good examples of sentences. You also have to be careful using these electronic dictionaries in translating some Indonesian words into English or vice versa since sometimes they do not provide the proper Indonesian English translation.

By: IndonesianLanguage.net

Find out the best ways to learn Indonesian language effectively! If you want to study Indonesian properly, try to get yourself an Indonesian language teacher who can guide you personally. What if you are one of the busiest people in the world who can hardly leave your country to come to Indonesia to learn the language? Don’t worry. You can still learn the language online through Skype, can’t you? A personal Indonesian language teacher should be able to teach you Indonesian language online and provide you with all the supporting and necessary materials as well.

If you really want to be able to speak Indonesian language, try to study Indonesian correctly. After you find a good teacher who can teach you Indonesian language, get yourself an Indonesian – English dictionary, and vice versa, to support you throughout the learning process. However though there are so many electronic dictionaries around, it is strongly suggested to have a dictionary book which can provide you with many examples of sentences usage.

The next step to study Indonesian would be to keep a notebook where you can write down all the new vocabularies that you find throughout the learning process. You will also need an exercise book where you can do all the assignments, exercises and homework given by your teacher.

Secret to Study Indonesian Successfully

Study Indonesian

Why are there some learners who do not reach their desired results after studying Indonesian for quite some time? They have had a good teacher and everything seems to work well until they realize that their Indonesian speaking skills are still limited. Well, in most cases you will be able to progress more rapidly if you set your own personal goal first prior to learning Indonesian.

Try to set a goal, together with your teacher, about how long you should learn the language and how to achieve that goal. Your teacher will later be able to break that long term goal into many smaller short term goals which also serve as the lesson plans throughout your learning process, without which it would be difficult to monitor the learners’ progress.

Consult also your teacher whether it is necessary for you to learn the Indonesian grammar, or other areas which you would like to focus on. The teacher will soon be able to make a specific lesson plan for each student. That way each student can guarantee the progress they’ll be making to achieve their ultimate goal.

Learning Indonesian is not a difficult process and should be done with ease and fun. All you need to do is simply find the learning and studying method which truly works for you. Learning a new language needs an ongoing process which needs ‘nurturing’ and strong commitment as well as hard work. Try to always stay focused and do all the assignments given by your teacher. Never underestimate all the exercises and tests given by the teacher as these build up your overall Indonesian language speaking skills.

By: IndonesianLanguage.net

What are the most useful tips on learning Indonesian language effectively? Many people say that learning Indonesian language is easy yet there are still English speaking people who have stayed in Indonesia for decades yet they can hardly speak basic Indonesian. So what are the best ways to learn Indonesian language in the most effective ways?

There are indeed some practical ways to learn the language which are proven to work for almost everyone. And below are the most useful tips on learning Indonesian language which most learners find effective:

Tips on Learning Indonesian

Useful Tips on Learning Indonesian

1. Be discipline

Just like learning other subjects, learning Indonesian language also requires commitment and discipline. Try to memorize new vocabularies each time and try to implement the newly learned words in sentences. You can skip this process, but this will only lead to much longer time to master the language, sometimes even years or decades.

2. Practice the language

Try to always use the language with native speakers. But simply trying to practice the language without following the first step, which is to memorize new words and phrases, would not be effective at all. How would you be able to practice the language and communicate with the locals if you hardly know any words and phrases or have very limited vocabularies?

3. Don’t get tempted

During the second step (which is to practice the language with the locals) you might be tempted to gradually skip the first step, which is to memorize new vocabularies. You might think that simply by trying to communicate and hang out more with the native speakers can help you build the vocabularies naturally. Sure you can. But how much time would you be willing to invest to finally master the language? If you are really serious in mastering Indonesian language within just a short period of time, try to always spare your time to get as many vocabularies as possible. This is because there is no tenses in Indonesian language and there is only very limited grammar in the language itself. Therefore building as many vocabularies as possible will help you master the language much faster.

Others would suggest you to listen to radio and television broadcasts in Indonesian language. But this tip is only for more advanced learners. For beginners, simply follow all those three tips above before engaging in more complex learning materials. However it is also highly suggested to read more Indonesian books, magazines or even newspaper for upper beginner to advanced learners to speed up the process.

No pain no gain. Learning a new language requires your full dedication and commitment to successfully master the language. Never underestimate the language no matter how easy it may seem at the beginning. Just follow all these simple tips on learning Indonesian language. And before you know it, you’ll be gossiping with your Indonesian neighbors in Indonesian language.

What is the best way to learn Indonesian colloquial? There are many ways of how to learn the Indonesian slang words, and one of the best ways is simply to listen to Indonesian TV programs, particularly those Indonesian soap operas where most scripts are written using Indonesian colloquial. Another way would be to listen to Indonesian songs, most of which also use many Indonesian colloquial.

For those who have learned Indonesian language before, I am sure that most of you are taught only the formal Indonesian language while in practice we use more Indonesian colloquial which is a little bit different from the formal one. But it is very easy to learn the spoken language once you have mastered the formal one.

But some of you might also question the importance of learning Indonesian colloquial. Actually Indonesian colloquial does not differ so much from that of the formal one. It still uses almost the same grammatical rules, even much more simple. But as the Indonesian language itself is always developing, the Indonesian slang vocabularies are also increasing in number although its usage is limited only among youngsters or those residing in big cities, such as Jakarta and few other big cities.

Below are a few Indonesian colloquial words that can help you learn Indonesian colloquial more easily:

Learn Indonesian Colloquial

Why to Learn Indonesian Colloquial

Why is it so important to learn Indonesian colloquial as well when learning Indonesian language? It is because most Indonesian people use Indonesian colloquial in their daily conversation, especially among children and teenagers. But the mostly used language in many Indonesian magazines, newspapers and (radio and television) news broadcasts is the formal Indonesian language.

By: Indonesianlanguage.net

When you learn Indonesian language, it is very important that you have a good Indonesian English dictionary to help you in your Indonesian learning. However for those who already have one, sometimes it is confusing and even frustrating to look up those Indonesian words in the Indonesian English dictionary. You have no idea how to find the Indonesian words in the dictionary. And you start wondering if the Indonesian English dictionary you have is a good one. If it is, why can’t you find the Indonesian words you are looking for?

Indonesian English Dictionary

For example, you are trying to find the meaning of the word “membawa” in an Indonesian English dictionary. You start opening the pages of ‘m’, hoping to see the word ‘membawa’. But after a while you still can not find the word. What is going on here? What did you do wrong? Why can’t you find the word ‘membawa’ in the pages of the first letter of ‘m’? If you’ve been in this situation before, and still have no clue of how to use the Indonesian English dictionary to look up the Indonesian words, let me help you how to find the Indonesian words in the Indonesian English dictionary.

The Fact About Indonesian English dictionary

The first rule to use the Indonesian English dictionary when trying to find a certain Indonesian word is that you have to take the root word first instead of the full word. For instance, when you are trying to find the word ‘membawa’, try to find out what the root word of the word you’re looking for. In this case, the root word of ‘membawa’ is ‘bawa’. Therefore you have to open the pages of the first letter ‘b’, instead of ‘m’, to find the word ‘bawa’ and there you will find the full word of ‘membawa’.

The same rule applies to when you’re trying to find the meaning of other Indonesian words containing prefixes, such as ber-, meng-, men-, ter-, ke-, mem-, me-, peng-, pem-, and other prefixes. But the question is now: How to know the root word of each Indonesian word with prefixes? The only answer to this question is to learn some basic Indonesian grammar, and that way you can easily recognize the root words of all Indonesian words with prefixes. Therefore it is indeed essential to learn some basic Indonesian grammar so that you can use your Indonesian English dictionary effectively.

All the Indonesian words listed in the Indonesian English dictionary are listed according to their root words, instead of the full words, therefore you need to understand of how to break those full Indonesian words with prefixes to get the root words. And the only way to do this is by learning the Indonesian grammar.

Unfortunately most Indonesian English dictionaries don’t tell nor teach the users exactly of how to find those Indonesian words with prefixes in the dictionaries themselves. It is assumed that all users are familiar of how to use the Indonesian English dictionaries. And this has made many English speakers who are learning Indonesian feel frustrated and confused.

How to Use Indonesian English dictionary

Below you can find some useful tips on how to separate Indonesian words into prefixes and root words so that you can take only the root words.

For the words beginning with the prefix ‘mem-‘, just omit the prefix, and you’ll get the root word. For example, the root word of ‘membawa’ is ‘bawa’.

For the words beginning with the prefix ‘men-‘, just omit the prefix, and you’ll get the root word. For example, the root word of ‘mendapat’ is ‘dapat’. However there are also some words beginning with ‘men-‘ which you have to replace the prefix ‘men’ with ‘t’, and you’ll get the root word. For example, the root word of ‘menaruh’ is ‘taruh’.

For the words beginning with the prefix ‘meny-‘, just replace the prefix with an ‘s’, and you’ll get the root word. For example, the root word of ‘menyisir’ is ‘sisir’.

And there are still other similar rules regarding other prefixes which are easy to understand.

After you understand the above rules, you can easily use your Indonesian English dictionary more effectively.

Learn Indonesian language

Nowadays there are more and more Australians who learn Indonesian language. Bahasa Indonesia (or Indonesian language) is spoken by over three hundred million people as either their first or second language. Together with an understanding of local culture and customs, an ability to speak Indonesian language is an important key to communicating effectively with people living in the Indonesia archipelago and the neighboring countries of Malaysia, Brunei, and Singapore. Hence studying Indonesian language means you will be able to communicate with more than three hundred million Indonesians, only a small percentage of whom are able to speak English. The Malay language is also a close relative to Indonesian. You can therefore understand both languages with ease since there are only minor differences in vocabulary. Therefore, learning Indonesian gives access to about three hundred million people—including those in Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei.

Australia is a multicultural country that understands the importance of learning languages other than English. Indonesian language is a popular language in Australia, and many Australians take the opportunity to learn Indonesian language at school and universities. Therefore the Australian Government has announced a nearly $65 million dollar funding increase for its Asian languages program, including Indonesian language, which provides greater opportunities for Australian school students to understand and engage with the region. It is because the Australian Government realizes that the key to strengthen the relationship between Australia and Indonesia is to become familiar with the Indonesian language, which has been taught at schools and universities in Australia for many years.

Linguistic Reasons to Learn Indonesian

Indonesian language is one of the easiest languages in the world — honest! Learning Bahasa Indonesia would be a valuable experience in itself, and what’s more: you can pick up the basics within just a few weeks. Below are a few reasons why it is so easy to learn Indonesian:

No tenses. Unlike the English language, Indonesian language has no tenses at all. Adding time indicators (like tomorrow, 2 days ago, now, etc.) and aspect markers into your sentences will do.

No genders or cases. Unlike in German, Indonesian language has no genders or grammatical cases attached to the nouns.

Simple plurals. Unlike in German, plurals are very simple in Indonesian. You only need to repeat the noun (e.g. bahasa ? bahasa-bahasa), or adding quantitative indicators (e.g. many, few) into the sentence (e.g. banyak bahasa ? many languages).

A simple system of word formation. Indonesian has a straightforward system for combining words with prefixes, suffixes, and infixes to create new words. For example: satu means one, whereas bersatu means to unite (i.e., to make into one). This means fewer words to memorize and you can (sort of) mix-and-match words to form your own word. The catch is that some words cannot be combined with some prefixes or suffixes, but you’ll learn that it’s simple.

Uses the 26 letters of the Roman alphabet, which means that there is no need to relearn the alphabet, or use special software to type.

Consistent spelling. Indonesian is very phonetic, just like Italian. Every character is consistently spelled the same way in any word, with only very few exceptions.

No Tones and simple stress patterns. Unlike in Chinese, Indonesian language has no tone in pronunciation. No matter where you put the stress, people will still recognize the word and understand the sentences.

Sentence form is easy to understand. Indonesian sentence structure is similar to English: Subject + Verb + (Object). So, you can easily form sentences in Indonesian language.

Very simple, isn’t it? Now you can see why learning Indonesian language is really worth it, especially when you plan to travel to Indonesia and the neighboring countries in the near future.
