Indonesian Language School – Online or Conventional?

By: IndonesianLanguage.net

What are the criteria of a good Indonesian language school? There are a number of Indonesian language schools and courses available nowadays, either in Indonesia or overseas, including in Europe, Australia, even in the USA. But how do you choose a reputable and a professional one? And also, an Indonesian language school which is suitable for others might not be suitable for some other learners.

But what if you are one of the busiest people in the world who would like to learn Indonesian yet you have very tight schedule yourself? This kind of people should be able to learn Indonesian language from an online Indonesian course or Indonesian distance learning, which enables you to learn Indonesian at your most convenient time and place. You can find a reputable Indonesian language school which provides this kind of distance learning.

Whichever Indonesian language school you choose, whether it is an online learning or face-to-face teaching, be sure to only choose a reputable one. Below are some of the most critical points to consider when choosing a good Indonesian language school:

Indonesian Language School – How to Choose a Good One

The first thing to consider when you choose a good Indonesian language school would be the teachers’ ability in communicating in good English. A professional Indonesian language school must have English speaking native Indonesian teachers who truly understand the Indonesians’ way of thinking in using Indonesian language in their daily lives. This is a very critical point in choosing a good Indonesian language school or course. There are a few English speaking Indonesians who can speak the English language quite fluently yet, to my surprise, they barely know much about their own Indonesian language.

There are also some native Indonesian teachers who can hardly speak English. This would be a hindrance in teaching the Indonesian language to English speaking people if they can not communicate their idea in English.

The second thing to consider when choosing a good Indonesian language school or course would be to decide whether you would like to enroll as a group or in a private class. For beginners who have never learned Indonesian at all, I would strongly suggest that you take a private class instead of as a group. Therefore avoid joining an Indonesian learning group, especially those with a large number of learners. This way you will safe a lot of your valuable time.

However for advanced learners, it would be a good idea if you would like to join a group of other learners with the same level of competence so that you can also learn the mistakes that others make during the learning session.

The third thing to consider is to make sure that the Indonesian language school you choose also teach you colloquial words. This would be beneficial especially if you intend to be able to communicate with the locals. I have heard many learners who complain that they can still find it very difficult to understand daily conversation or Indonesian movies. This is because almost all Indonesians use Indonesian slang or colloquial when communicating with others. That is why it is very important to learn the colloquial or slang Indonesian as well if you intend to be able to speak with the locals.

Indonesian Language Courses in Europe

By: Indonesianlanguage.net

There are several good Indonesian language courses in the world. And each of them offers several different, interesting programs, such as writing class, conversation class, or mixed of both. But how do you choose the good one that suits you best? I’ve found one of the best Indonesian language courses in London and Paris recently, http://www.languagetrainers.co.uk/indonesian_courses_london.php, which charges you reasonable cost for such excellent services that they provide. And they also have quite many professional Indonesian teachers to help you learn Indonesian language in a more flexible way than most traditional Indonesian courses do.

The interesting thing about this fact is that most Indonesian language courses overseas are not run by the Indonesians themselves. But rather they are run either by Europeans or Malays who know more about the importance of learning Indonesian language for some English speakers and are very knowledgeable about how to ‘market’ their Indonesian courses to those English speakers.

How to Choose the Best Indonesian Language Courses

Indonesian Language Courses

Just like any other Indonesian language courses in Indonesia, the first thing you must be sure of when choosing which Indonesian courses suit you best is to see if the teachers are experienced and highly professional. You can know these facts by asking if they are all certified teachers or not. Why do you have to check their certification? It is because nowadays there are so many unskilled Indonesians who claim themselves to be professional teachers, especially in financial crisis like it is.

Secondly, you can see their professionalism by checking their English fluency. There are many Indonesians who consider themselves to be Indonesian teachers yet they can even hardly understand or speak good English. You can know their English speaking ability by asking them questions in English and see how their responses are. Good Indonesian language courses are supposed to only hire English speaking Indonesian teachers.

Another way to check their professionalism is to see if they appreciate your time and money. Beware of any Indonesian language courses which don’t seem to appreciate your time by coming to your office late or forget about the learning-teaching schedule for whatsoever reasons.

Thirdly, be sure that the so-called-Indonesian teachers really know how to transfer their knowledge in good English. Why should you have an English speaking teacher if he can not answer your questions well?

Indonesian Language Courses – Private or Group

After you find a good Indonesian school, you might be wondering if you should enroll in private class or group class or even online class. It is highly suggested that you enroll in a private class rather than a group. It is because when you take a private class, your teacher could focus more on improving your Bahasa Indonesia speaking skills more effectively. In a group class, the teachers do not have more time to just focus on just one student, and therefore sometimes it is much cheaper to take a group class. But if you want to succeed in improving your overall Indonesian language skills within a short period of time, it is recommended to take private class instead of group.

Private classes in Indonesian language courses also tend to be more serious than just traditional Indonesian schools therefore your Indonesian language skills will improve more in private Indonesian courses.

By: IndonesianLanguage.net

For you who plan to take a Bahasa Indonesia course in the near future, you might have been looking for various information regarding which Bahasa Indonesia course is the best for you. However with so many diverse information offered you might be confused on how to choose the right Indonesian language course, especially because one Bahasa Indonesia course which is suitable for your friend is not necessarily suitable for others. So how do you decide which Bahasa Indonesia course is the right one for you personally? First of all, let’s talk about the criteria of choosing a good Bahasa Indonesia course so that you don’t waste your time and money on language courses that do not suit your needs.

Many of us struggle to learn a second language. As children, we learn to speak our native language by doing, touching, smelling, tasting, experiencing, looking and listening. A good Bahasa Indonesia course will teach you in a way that encourages you to think ‘the Indonesian way’. It might feel ‘weird’ at first, but try to get used to it.

Criteria of a Good Bahasa Indonesia Course

Bahasa Indonesia Course

Many traditional Bahasa Indonesia courses will teach you to translate from your native language; however, for some people it is far more effective to learn to think directly in Indonesian. Effective Bahasa Indonesia course will therefore deliver commands in Indonesian language, and will involve acting, imitation and doing, using ONLY the Indonesian language. However if you are a beginner who have never learned Indonesian language before, and you have totally zero Indonesian knowledge in your brain, it is highly recommended to look for an Indonesian language teacher who can speak English fluently. So that you and your teacher will not get into frustration when the teacher is trying to explain the meaning of a word, let alone a sentence or even grammar.

A good bahasa Indonesia course will provide you with repetition in a varied format so that it will ‘sink in’ more easily.

A good bahasa Indonesia course will also introduce you to Indonesian words through numerous experiences and media.

Next, let’s talk about something that should be put into serious consideration after you choose a bahasa Indonesia course. You see, merely buying a bahasa Indonesia course will get you nowhere, unless you devote some time and effort to actually learn the language. Even the best and the most expensive Indonesian course will get you nothing if you do not put enough effort in seriously learning the language. This is why after you purchase a bahasa Indonesia course, you must seriously sustain a consistent good learning habit and learn the language every single day, because the best way to learn a foreign language, including Bahasa Indonesia, is to not to learn it for 4 hours a day and once every week but to learn it for just 45 minutes to 1 hour a day and every day in a week, because the more often you are exposed to a foreign language, the better you will learn.

Learning Indonesian language is certainly not a piece of cake, but with the right strategies, the right Bahasa Indonesia course and the right mentality, you should be able to achieve proficiency in a very short time.

According to Wikipedia, the Indonesian language is a normative form of the Malay language, an Austronesian (or Malayo-Polynesian) language which has been used as a lingua franca in the Indonesian archipelago for centuries. Bahasa Indonesia was then elevated to the status of official language with the Indonesian declaration of independence in 1945, drawing inspiration from the Sumpah Pemuda (Youth’s Oath) event in 1928.

Another interesting fact about Indonesian language is that the language tends to be more extensively used and also regarded as a first language in urban areas, and is usually the second or even third language in rural areas. The language is still also widely used in East Timor, which was once an Indonesian province from 1975 to 1999, the Netherlands, and also in some parts of Australia (such as on Christmas Island and Cocos Islands).

The modern Indonesian language which we use today is a highly unique language which has received many influences from many other languages, including: Arabic, Sanskrit, Hokkien (Chinese), Portuguese, Dutch, and many other languages. But the biggest influence has come from Dutch, with the staggering number of around 10,000 loanwords, as a result of 350 years of colonization.

Each influence it receives mostly relates to some different aspects. For instance, most loanwords from Chinese are related to food or trade since the Chinese people first came to Indonesia to trade and the native Indonesians also seemed to love the food which was introduced by the Chinese. Most loanwords from Arabic are associated with religion, which is Islam. And all these influences, including other influences, have formed the Indonesian language into what we have today.

Which Indonesian language course is suitable for you? Is it private course or semi private or even group class? What about online Indonesian language course? Would you also prefer to focus more on conversation, writing, or combination of both? For a beginner who has never learned Indonesian language before, it is strongly suggested to have an intensive private class to enable the student to progress more rapidly by personal guidance from the teacher.

Indonesian Language Course

Most people want to take an Indonesian language course to learn to speak Indonesian fast. But some people also give up on the learning process because they became bored pretty quickly with the learning format. That is why it is so important to begin with an Indonesian language course which teaches your second language the same way you learned your first language. That is with interactivity, strong images, rewards for learning and reinforcement.

A private class is also suitable for those who have specific needs and want to develop his/her Indonesian language skills on that particular interest, such as to develop his/her Indonesian language skills in political and economic fields.

A bigger group (class) would only be suitable for those who have similar language skill level.

And speaking about online language courses, the internet has really changed a great deal about the way people learn Indonesian and other languages. The internet is all about interactivity and strong visuals which are specifically designed to improve memory while offering a fun learning environment. Therefore taking an online Indonesian course can be a truly rewarding experience, too, and mainly because it is internet based so that it is quite easy to get the whole family or friends involved in the learning activity. The online Indonesian language course is also suitable for those who have limited time and space. While you use the internet to learn Indonesian, when surfing, you can also fine fun language games, Indonesian movies, Indonesian music, and even Indonesian podcasts. All of these extras are some simple ways to speak Indonesian language quickly and fluently yet maintaining the fun learning process at the very same time.

These things must be put into your consideration when you decide to enroll into an Indonesian language course. As a student, you must also be aware of how the lesson is delivered, and the proportion of teaching, exercise, or test.

If you decide to choose a conversation class, be sure of what kind of conversation you are interested in. It is because a children class is completely different from an adult’s class. And even there are more divisions within the adult’s class itself. You have to let the teacher know what kind of subject you want to focus more, whether you want to focus more on daily conversation, or politics, or economics, or even combination of all.

Divisions in Indonesian Language Course

Just like the English language, there are many divisions in the Indonesian language course. Some students might also be interested in learning the Indonesian grammar, which tells you the knowledge of suffixes and other aspects, including phrases and proverbs. These grammar issue might seem a little bit complicated at the beginning. But as you’ve started to learn and practice, you’ll realize just how easy it is!

Indonesia consists of many ethnics and cultures with their own unique languages. Each of these Indonesian languages is different one from another. And Indonesian language, which is also known as Bahasa Indonesia, is the national language which unites all Indonesian people and widely used throughout Indonesia. Below are a few examples of Indonesian languages:

Examples of Indonesian Languages

Sundanese

According to Wikipedia, Sundanese (which is also called Basa Sunda in local Sundanese dialect) literally means “language of Sunda”) is the language of about 27 million people from the western part of Java or about 15% of the Indonesian population.

The Sundanese language appears to be most closely related to Madurese and Malay, and more distantly related to the Javanese language, mostly spoken in Central and East Java.

Javanese

The Javanese language (or also called basa Jawa in Javanese or simply bahasa Jawa in Indonesian language) is the language of the people in the central and eastern parts of the island of Java, in Indonesia. In addition, there are also some pockets of Javanese speakers in the northern coast of western Java. It is the native language of more than 75,500,000 people.

The Javanese language is part of the Austronesian family, and is therefore related to Indonesian and other Malay varieties. Most Sundanese and Javanese speakers also speak Indonesian for official and commercial purposes and to communicate with non-Javanese Indonesians.

Both of these Indonesian languages are the mostly spoken Indonesian dialects in Indonesia. The other Indonesian languges are Balinese, Batak, and other dialects. It is estimated that there are around 300 Indonesian dialects in Indonesia. Despite the fact that there are so many dialects in Indonesia, almost all Indonesians can speak Bahasa Indonesia or Indonesian language as the national language, therefore it is essential to learn Indonesian language while staying in Indonesia.

The Fact About Indonesian Languages

Indonesian Languages

Therefore if you want to interact more with the locals, it is strongly suggested that you learn bahasa instead of any other Indonesian languages since most Indonesian people can speak Indonesian language.

But in some cases you might also be interested in learning one of those Indonesian languages, especially if you are a researcher who needs to interact more with people in a certain location or village.

Just like the English language, the Indonesian language also has a slang version which is commonly used in daily conversation, especially during some informal situation. This Indonesian language colloquial has been part of the Indonesian languages itself and is still developing. So for those who already have the ability to converse in (formal) Indonesian language, it is quite easy for them to learn a few Indonesian slang vocabularies, too, and try to use it in daily conversation. So when do we use formal Indonesian language and informal or Indonesian colloquial? Formal Indonesian language is used in any formal situation, such as in the media (newspapers, etc) while informal Indonesian language is mostly used in any informal situation. However it is also possible to use the formal Indonesian language in all aspects of life and in any situation, and you can gradually pick up some colloquial and phrases easily after you learn how to speak in (formal) Indonesian language.

Indonesia, which has amazing history for hundreds of years, is a rich country which has a lot of cultures, customs and languages. And their diverse Indonesian languages reflect the beautiful cultures they have.
